Product feed optimization

Google Merchant Center, Shopping feeds, attribute mapping, promotions, GTIN discipline. How I turn the product feed into the discovery surface that carries the most commerce.

Surface playbook. One of 19 discovery surfaces inside Search Everywhere Optimization. Methodology first, then applied against the industry that fits.

TL;DR

Product feed optimization is the ecommerce discipline that quietly runs half the shopping graph. Ship real GTINs, fill every attribute Google will accept, keep the price and availability in sync with the site to the minute, and populate all ten additional image slots. A clean feed drives free listings, Shopping ads, Google Lens matching, and increasingly AI shopping citations from the same source of truth.

The surface, in one paragraph

A product feed is the machine-readable catalog a merchant hands to a discovery engine. Google Merchant Center takes a feed and uses it to populate Google Shopping (both paid and free listings), Google Images, Google Lens matches, Performance Max campaigns, and increasingly the shopping snippets AI answer engines return. Amazon takes a different feed format through Seller Central. Meta ingests a catalog for Facebook and Instagram Shops. TikTok Shop takes yet another format. Each engine ranks the same product differently based on the completeness of the feed, the freshness of price and availability, image quality, and category fit. A brand that treats the feed as an afterthought loses to the brand that treats the feed as a first-class content surface with its own review cadence.

Where this fits in Search Everywhere Optimization

PFO plugs into multiple surfaces at once.

SEO for product queries. Google's free product listings appear in the main SERP for commercial queries. A clean feed puts thousands of products into that surface.

VxSO uses the feed. Google Lens matches to Merchant Center inventory. Better feed, better Lens matches, more visual-search sessions.

AEO increasingly cites shopping. Perplexity and ChatGPT already cite shopping snippets. The feed is the source.

Paid Shopping and Performance Max. Feed quality drives ad quality score and cost efficiency. A better feed cuts CPCs while raising impression share.

CWV on PDPs. Fast PDPs feed better landing page experience scores in Merchant Center and better paid quality overall.

The five levers

1. GTIN and identifier discipline

Every product with a manufacturer identifier gets a real GTIN (UPC, EAN, JAN, ISBN). Every product also gets brand and MPN populated. For custom or unbranded goods, identifier_exists gets set to false, but for anything with a real GTIN, "false" is a lie that hurts visibility. Google matches products across sellers using GTINs to build product knowledge panels in Shopping. Products with clean identifiers show up in comparison shopping; products without them show up alone and get less traffic.

2. Title and description engineered for search

Merchant Center reads product titles like a search snippet. Title format that works: brand, product type, key attribute, size/color, gender if apparel. "Ryobi 18V Cordless Drill Kit, 1/2 inch Chuck, Battery Included." Not "Ultimate Power Tool Solution." Description gets the full spec, features, and use case, again with a query-first mindset. I audit title CTR and iterate.

3. All ten additional_image_link slots filled

The main image is required. The ten additional_image_link slots are optional and 80% of feeds leave them empty. Fill them with lifestyle, detail, scale, packaging, and 360-degree shots. More images means better Lens matching, better Shopping listings, better conversion. This is a lever most brands ignore.

4. Price and availability synced to the minute

Merchant Center penalizes price and availability mismatches between the feed and the PDP. Real-time or near-real-time inventory feeds through the Content API or a supplemental feed with high-frequency updates. Batch daily uploads leave revenue on the table during flash sales and stockouts. On promotions, the sale_price and sale_price_effective_date fields matter more than the promotion program most brands use.

5. Category, product_type, and custom_label depth

Google's category taxonomy is 6,000+ nodes deep. Most feeds default to broad categories. Deep, specific categorization (going four to six levels deep) improves relevance matching. product_type is the merchant's own hierarchy and drives internal reporting. custom_label 0 through 4 are five free-form fields I use for bid segmentation: margin buckets, seasonality, hero SKU status, new arrivals, clearance. Together they power sophisticated Performance Max campaign structures.

First 30 / 60 / 90 days

Days 1 to 30: audit and clean

Merchant Center audit. Disapprovals count and reason. Warnings count. Product coverage. Feed refresh cadence. Landing page experience errors.

Attribute completeness scoring. What percentage of products have brand, GTIN, MPN, condition, availability, gender, age_group, color, size, material, pattern, product_type deep, google_product_category deep, and all ten additional_image_link slots filled.

Price and availability sync check. Sample 50 products. Compare feed to site to actual inventory. Log discrepancies.

Image quality audit. Which products have promotional overlays or text on primary images (a violation). Which have low-resolution images. Which lack white background where required.

Category audit. Percentage of products with 4+ level google_product_category. Percentage with meaningful product_type hierarchy.

Deliverable at day 30: a scorecard of feed health, a prioritized fix list, a supplemental feed strategy, and a real-time inventory sync plan.

Days 31 to 60: fix and enrich

Disapproval remediation. Fix GTIN errors, price mismatches, image overlays, category violations.

Title and description rewrite on the top 500 SKUs. Formula applied, CTR baseline captured.

Additional image link population from DAM. All ten slots for the top 500 SKUs.

Category depth increased. Automation via a rules-based supplemental feed where possible.

custom_label rollout for bidding segmentation.

Deliverable at day 60: zero critical disapprovals on the top 500 SKUs, enriched titles, full image slot coverage, deeper categorization.

Days 61 to 90: scale and monitor

Feed monitoring dashboard live. Automated alerts on disapproval spikes, price mismatch counts, and availability drift.

Long-tail SKU coverage. Extend title and image discipline to the next 2,000 SKUs.

Promotion program adoption. Merchant Promotions Center configured. Sale price effective date discipline on flash sales.

Multi-endpoint feed extension. Amazon, Meta, TikTok Shop, Bing Merchant Center. Same source of truth, different mapping tables.

Deliverable at day 90: automated monitoring, clean coverage across the primary SKU set, multi-endpoint feed presence, promotion program running.

Tools I use

  • Google Merchant Center. Diagnostics, opportunities, feed uploads, supplemental feeds.
  • Merchant Center Next. The newer interface with performance and competitive insights.
  • Content API for Shopping. Programmatic feed updates for near-real-time sync.
  • DataFeedWatch, Feedonomics, GoDataFeed, Channable. Feed transformation and multi-channel distribution.
  • Google Ads. Performance Max, Shopping campaigns, custom_label segmentation.
  • Amazon Seller Central. Listing quality dashboard, category browse tree.
  • Meta Commerce Manager. Facebook and Instagram catalog.
  • ScreamingFrog SEO Spider. PDP schema audit and structured data extraction.
  • Rich Results Test. Product schema validation on PDPs.
  • Google Ads Editor. Bulk campaign structure changes for feed-driven bidding.

What kills the program

identifier_exists=false as a workaround. Setting this to false to bypass GTIN validation hides the product from comparison shopping and cuts free listings.

Price drift between feed and site. Merchant Center suspends accounts for repeat price mismatches. Real-time sync or same-day batch is table stakes.

Promotional overlays on primary images. "SALE 20% OFF" text on the main image is a policy violation and gets the product disapproved.

Shallow categories. "Apparel > Women" is not enough. "Apparel > Women > Dresses > Wedding > A-line" competes properly.

Titles written for the brand voice, not for search. "The Whisper Dress" ranks nowhere. "White A-line Bridal Dress, Sleeveless, Size 8" ranks.

Batch daily updates on hot inventory. Flash sales and stockouts need Content API or 2-hour supplemental feeds.

Ignoring the Merchant Center diagnostics tab. Warnings compound. What starts as one product disapproval becomes an account-level suspension in two months.

Duplicate SKUs across variants. Item groups and variant IDs done wrong split traffic and confuse the algorithm.

KPIs that matter

  • Approved product count. Total and by category.
  • Disapproval rate. Percent of feed disapproved.
  • Attribute completeness score. Weighted composite across required and recommended fields.
  • Free listing impressions and clicks. Merchant Center performance tab.
  • Shopping ads impression share and CPC. Google Ads Performance Max reporting.
  • Landing page experience score. Feed diagnostics.
  • Price competitiveness index. Merchant Center's price-benchmark data.
  • Feed-to-checkout conversion rate. Business KPI attribution.

FAQ

Do I still need a Merchant Center feed if I run Performance Max?

Yes. Performance Max relies on the Merchant Center feed as its inventory source. A better feed makes Performance Max cheaper and more effective. Feed quality drives everything Google Shopping does.

What is a GTIN and why does it matter?

GTIN is the global trade item number: UPC, EAN, ISBN, or JAN. Google matches products across sellers using GTINs. A missing or wrong GTIN means the product loses visibility in category listings and comparison shopping.

How many product images should I submit?

One main image plus up to ten additional. I always fill the additional_image_link slots with lifestyle, detail, scale, and packaging shots. More images means better matching in Lens and Shopping.

What breaks feeds most often?

Missing GTINs, mismatched prices between the site and the feed, mismatched availability, images with promotional overlays, and category miscategorization. Feed disapprovals compound if not fixed weekly.

Should I use supplemental feeds?

Yes, for optimizations that do not belong in the primary product catalog: enhanced titles, custom_label values for bidding, promotion IDs, and marketing tags. Supplemental feeds are how experienced PFO teams move fast.

Does PFO help beyond paid Shopping?

Yes. The Merchant Center feed also powers free product listings in Google Shopping, Google Images, Google Lens matching, and increasingly AEO shopping citations. It is one input, many surfaces.
